01 Aug The iconic Polish pasta with strawberries
Makaron z truskawkami made famous
Pasta with strawberries is one of those dishes that everyone outside of Easter Europe fails to understand. However, it’s become a bit iconic since Iga Swiatek made it famous. saying that it’s her absolute favourite dish. Shock and outrage followed this innocent remark. This led to Jamie Olive trying the dish on camera. All the fuss seems funny to Poles, as this is one of those super simple, innocent dishes your grandma would make you in the summer holidays. I will explain why in Poland pasta with strawberries is not a strange concept.
Sweet pasta and dumplings
If you have my third cookbook, Pierogi, you would have noticed that In Poland we eat sweet as well as savoury dumplings. For us, pasta is an extension of dumplings. As you would have rice pudding in the UK, you might have sweet potato dumplings, such as leniwe, in Poland. You might also have pasta with some cream, sugar and cinnamon, as a dessert or snack. Pasta with strawberries is a fruity version of this that we eat when the fruit is in season. And though it might sound strange to Westerners, like Jamie Oliver, don’t knock it until you tried it. Jamie loved it, by the way.
Recipe for pasta with strawberries
This is the sort of dish you would eat either for breakfast or mid-morning/afternoon snack. Sometimes, if it’s really hot and we aren’t very hungry, we might even eat it for dinner.
